Thank-you @poloconghaile for your visit to our hot Thank-you @poloconghaile for your visit to our hotel & town ‘There was nothing in the town to draw people to us,’ one Athy local says. ‘But this has brought a reason… and if they’re in town, they’ll spend a few pound.’ I visited the Co Kildare town to see its €7.5 million Shackleton Experience, and explore how it might unlock tourism for locals. The town has had its ups and downs like many, but there’s a sense of a new focal point - ‘our museum is our anchor store’. Read the full story at independent.ie/travel ✈️ Ernest Shackleton was a polar adventurer who never reached the South Pole, but who is today seen as a model of leadership (he famously led the rescue of his crew, with others including Tom Crean, after the Endurance was lost to the ice 110 years go). The revamped museum showcases his story, but I wanted to see how the tourists who come to see it may also trickle outwards… into trad sessions, barge trips, even buying several suits. ‘Athy is no longer a pass-through place,’ as one local hotelier says.
